I know this topic has been discussed over and over again however I have yet to see any real precise answer on the subject with regards to training with rocket fins or duck feet. Both fins are sold on the navy seal web site and both descriptions on the website state that they are for maritime forces, so I was wondering for those of you have already been at BUD/S or are there currently, what do you think my best bet is? And if rocket fins are the case do you train with manta boots or not and should I train with them as well if rocket fins are the route to take?

Hey Erik,
This kind of belongs in the equipment forum, but since this forum is DEAD I'll tell you what I know.

I haven't been to BUD/S, but from what I understand, the Rocket fins are less powerful but put less of a beating on your feet and ankles. The VOIT UDT fins are a little longer, much stronger and faster, but require much more leg strength to fully utilize their abilities. Rockets are more adjustable, as voits only have the rubber band. You can use either with booties (they do in BUD/S) but you'll have to go up a size in the VOITs to do it.

There are several revisions of the Rockets, I think the one currently in use is the Rocket 2, but don't quote me on that. I plan on getting a set of VOITs to train with, but as long as you're training with a set of stiff, thick fins, your ankles will be in good enough shape when it actually comes time to perform.

HTH,
-Andrew

probably a better choice purely for training. Voits are cheaper new, but you can get rockets for very cheap off ebay, and I know of one place you can get genuine UDT VOITs for less than navyseals.com, but that's probably the best place to get them. PM me for more info.

PS, the multi-colored neon voits at Dick's are NOT UDT style fins. They are shorter and are more for lifegaurding/body boarding.

UDT are better for css & suface swimming.

Rocket are better for scuba and treading water.
