HT1 hit one of your biggest problems on the nose. When you lift your entire head out of the water it drags your legs down and creates drag. Try to swim downhill, if you keep your head down it will raise your legs and make you more horizontal in the water. I also noticed that your pull with your top arm is at the same time as your scissor kick. You should scissor glide, pull glide, pull breath/glide, reload. When you scissor kick you shoot your arms out hugging your head between your shoulders and biceps and glide, stroke with your top hand and leave your bottom ear glued to your shoulder. After your first arm stroke let your body roll until your lips break the surface breath while you stroke your bottom arm. Another trick to a better time is your turn, you need to get off that wall as quick as possible. If you work on speeding up your turn you can easily cut 20 to 30 seconds of your 500 swim time. Try timing yourself in a 500 when you swim at 75%, I bet you your time will be very close to your time you are at already. Swimming is all technique take your time stroke hard, stay horizontal and glide. i find when I try to sprint my time goes down, if I slow down and focus on technique my time drops.

Check out this to correct some of your issues. This is the best video I have found. And this video shows some of Don's drills for the CSS.

Hey Nick, Thanks for the reply. It sounds like you're describing the method Stew Smith teaches. The technique Don teaches is somewhat different. From what I've gathered on here, most find his more efficient. When I first became interested in this all a few years ago, Stew was the only one teaching the technique that I could find online. I haven't tried his technique in a couple of years. Maybe I'll play with it tomorrow and see how it feels.

Thanks again!

Tyler

Hey Dominic, it's funny, I've seen that video before, but if you watch how they teach it, then go to 4:21 and watch the guys swimming in the background, it's a completely different stroke than they teach with the guy at the beginning...they're using a technique more akin to Don's technique. Just thought that was interesting.
